1-28 Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer, Book Three

Spoiler warning. I also have my thoughts on Book Three which, too, contain spoilers.

My usual icon table generator wasn't working, so special credit goes to http://madzia.ircx.net.pl/icontable/ for this one.

The next icon post next week will be a multi-fandom post.

My thoughts on Book Three:

This was the bit where I felt there were parts that could've been left out. A lot of it felt dragged on and on and though there were small things about some chapters that were important, such as Bella training her power, I was exhausted to the point where I kind of just wanted to get it over with.

As I was quickly re-reading this section to select the quotes, I picked up on things that I didn't notice before. Like, I already knew that Jacob was going to imprint on Nessie, so during the part where Edward and Bella return to the house after hunting and Edward was being his old Twilight to Eclipse self to Jacob I actually understood why Edward was being that way...because he already knew, because of his power, that Jacob had imprinted on Nessie. So that was pretty interesting.

(On a side note, I kind of caught a cold this week and I just had a self-induced nose bleed in the middle of this post. How ironic.)

Speaking of dragging on, if it weren't for the Volturi, I thought that the chapter where Bella finally finds her place in life as a vampire would've made a great ending. I don't really have anything else to say about that, I've just always thought that it would make a good ending, haha.

The part that I had the biggest problem with was the LACK OF FINAL EPIC BATTLE. I mean, we sat with the Cullens for a month waiting around and gathering a massive group of witnesses, and we even saw Bella get fake passports and stuff if Jacob had to escape with Nessie. I don't know about you, but I was getting really built up for an epic fight between the Cullens and their friends vs. the Volturi.

In her interview with MuggleCast, Stephenie Meyer said that she wanted that part to be like a courtroom drama. So, basically that meant the book was always going to be anti-climatic.

Not to sound sadistic or anything, but I was kind of disappointed that no one was killed. I feel that what Stephenie Meyer failed to do was to connect us with other emotions that weren't happy. She was so keen on getting her 'happily ever after' that she was willing to sacrifice what could have been an amazing, epic, battle. I mean, if there was a huge fight scene at the end and no one on the 'good' side died (because we know Stephenie Meyer would've never let that happen), I'd be all right with that because there would have been a struggle for survival and in the end, the Cullens being alive would have been more appreciated. But I suppose this entire series has been all about getting your 'happily ever after' no matter how much of a Plain Jane you could be.

I thought the vampire index at the end was pretty cool. Like Jacob, I too was getting confused with all the new vampires.

What else...the very end when Bella showed Edward her memories was really sweet. I think it wrapped up the series very well. As she showed him her human memories, it kind of reminded the readers of how far we've come with the series. We were reminded of the first time we, along with Bella, saw that mysterious Edward and the Cullen clan and the whirlwind that ensued after that. It certainly reminded me of the first time I read Twilight and how addicted I became in such a short amount of time.

So, though Book Three wrapped up a book that wasn't exactly the most heart-breaking ending to the Twilight series, I didn't hate it but I didn't love it. I could tell that Stephenie Meyer put her best effort into a 700+ page book, and I appreciated it.

EDIT REGARDING MIDNIGHT SUN: By the way, I know I'm going to get a lot of questions about this in the future, so I just want to say that I have not read the leak of Midnight Sun and I'm not planning on it. So I will not make any quote icons for the leaked version. I will, however, make quote icons when I have the book physically in my hands. Right now, what is leaked is a rough version of Stephenie Meyer's vision, and I am not going to make icons of work that she is not completely happy with yet. I will be ready to icon the book when I read the story the way it was intended by the author because that is how I believe it should be. I mean, it's obviously not epic literature or whatever, and I'm failing at not trying to sound all butthurt about it, but I personally don't like reading leaks no matter what book it is.

If you want to read it, read away! HAHA. I heard Rob leaked it? If so, that is pretty hilarious.

I really thought #4 was terrible. I definitely agreed with what you said about the epic battle- I was waiting for it. IDK, it just wasn't as fun as Twilight.

I agree with you that it wasn't as fun as Twilight. It's my favourite one!

I'm more than pretty sure that I could have just read your icons in lieu of the book and been happier than actually reading the book. They're awesome. I might use some, will credit of course.

alive isn't sad // it is when it's over: [Twilight] E/B.dramaturgy on August 29th, 2008 01:19 am (UTC)
Gah, I was disappointed with the lack of epic battle at the end, too. I feel like she really cut the Volturi's legs out from under them. I guess I just felt like that happily ever after wasn't earned. And now when I read their parts in the earlier books I just want to yell STOP IT, SHUT UP, YOU'RE SECRETLY LAME at the Volturi.

But nice choice for the quotes. :)
flipflopkittyflipflopkitty on August 29th, 2008 01:42 am (UTC)
Me too. When I finished reading and I went online to talk to a bunch of friends (who didn't read Twilight but followed the story.. thanks to my uncanny ability to explain the entire series in less than an hour), I told them that I was so disappointed with BD. When they asked why... I told them I'd been waiting for a whole lot of Volturi ass-kicking. There was a whole lot of talking, Volturi being pricks and Bella's OMFE new power but no ass kicking? Just even a tiny, tiny bit? You know... just Bella kicking Jane's ass so hard, you'd think Bella's foot went up Jane's ass. Freakin' cowards. lol.
